Hosni Mubarak, Egypt’s strongman president for 30 years, has resigned and left Cairo.  Newly created Vice President Omar Suleiman announced today. From CNN:

Vice President Omar Suleiman announced the resignation on state television and said he was transferring authority to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to “run the affairs of the country.”

There is momentary bliss throughout Egypt’s major cities, with hundreds of thousands celebrating in the streets. But Suleiman is a creature of the Mubarak regime, and his appointment was initially unacceptable to the revolutionaries. Major questions remain about his status, and what the Army and its generals will do.  More of the same, or qualitative change? But this is a major turning point, by any measure.

Tunisia and Egypt have now both driven their leaders from power. What next for Egypt, and what next for the Arab world?
