Robots to Replace Lawyers?
Slate’s Farhad Manjoo is writing a series titled, “Will Robots Steal Your Job?”
Check out the fifth installment, dealing with the legal profession.
My first reaction was, “You’re crazy, the legal profession deals with materials so subjective and diverse that a robot could never do this (in the foreseeable future – but don’t totally discount the possibility of a technological singularity).”
After reading the article, I find the focus a bit more on software that is speeding legal tasks that used to take more time and personnel. So far as it goes, that’s true – and it is costing lawyers jobs, and will continue to. But it isn’t so much about a robot getting up and arguing a case in court or negotiating. Not yet. Not for a long, long time. Watson notwithstanding.
